Keeping Young Lives on Track forms the heart and soul of the Streetwise Run

Funds raised will go towards programmes for youth and children affected by the following issues:
Each year on average:
- 4,000 youth are arrested by the police
- 800 secondary school students drop out of school
- At least 75 pregnant teens in crisis call out for help
- Over 200 children are reportedly abused
The Streetwise Run has 2 social purposes:
1. Lasting the Distance
The Streetwise Run is about finishing the race, not just about winning. It is about instilling discipline, perseverance and mental strength. Youths at risk from Beyond and other welfare agencies train under professionals trainers 3 times a week, 4 months prior to the race. The training enables youth to be stronger physically and mentally. They will begin to feel more positive about themselves, thus reducing the risk of delinquent behaviour. Also, being a member of an athletic team helps meet the youths’ need for recognition and belonging offering them an alternative to street gangs & other negative influences.
Finally, long distance running challenges young people to ‘last the distance’, an important strength to transfer onto other aspects of their lives.
2. The ART- Accountability, Responsibility & Transparency of winning respect
Youths from Beyond Social Services will have sponsors who take an active interest in their progress. Hence, they will serve as ambassadors as they help put a face to the organisation. This duty gives them a sense of purpose & pride. Also, to be accountable to their sponsors, youths have to be responsible & transparent in their race preparations, schoolwork & other aspects of their lives.
In short, the event creates the context to impart to young people the important principles of accountability, responsibility & transparency in a simple way that they can understand and experience. |
